The Folger Fellowships

The Folger Institute is providing a unique and amazing opportunity to receive a Folger 2017-18 Fellowship. Anyone who holds a terminal degree in their field is eligible to apply for short term and long term fellowship. The purpose of the Folger is to support research and offering advanced scholarly programs in the humanities. Each year, the Folger Institute awards approximately five long-term and forty-five short-term fellowships. The Long-term fellows will get a monthly stipend of $5,555.55 for up to $50,000, and short-term fellows will get a monthly stipend of $2,500.

The Folger Shakespeare Library established in 1932 as a gift to the American people by Henry Clay Folger and his wife Emily Jordan Folger. The Folger Institute is a center for research in early modern humanities at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for this fellowship, you must:

  • Artists, archivists, curators, independent scholars and librarians holding appropriate terminal degrees are also eligible to apply.
  • Applicants for long-term NEH fellowships must either be US citizens or foreign nationals who have been in the US for the three years preceding application.
  • Scholars must hold a terminal degree in their field in order to be eligible for a long-term fellowship.
  • Scholars must hold a terminal degree in their field in order to be eligible for a short-term fellowship.

Supporting Documents:

To apply for a long-term fellowship, please submit the following:

  • A 250-word abstract of your project.
  • 1,500-word description of your project, placing particular emphasis on the proposed topic’s importance, its relevance to the field, and the originality and sophistication of your approach.
  • Two-page CV.
  • One-to-two page list of primary sources, rare materials, or digital assets you wish to consult at the Folger Library.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

To apply for a short-term fellowship, please submit the following:

  • A 250-word abstract of your project.
  • 1,000-word description of your project, placing particular emphasis upon the ways that you intend to work with the Folger’s collections.
  • Two-page CV.
  • One-to-two page list of primary sources, rare materials, or digital assets you wish to consult at the Folger Library.
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • Long-term fellowships support scholars in residence for six to nine months with a monthly stipend of $5,555.55 for up to $50,000.
  • Short-term fellowships support scholars in residence for one to three months with a monthly stipend of $2,500.
