The Sons of the Republic of Texas is offering the 2016-2017 Texas History Essay Contest for graduate seniors in any high school. History, Government and English students are particularly encouraged to participate in the contest. The purpose Essay Contest is to encourage students to explore the pioneer spirit of Texans on the early-day frontier, their methods of accomplishing their goals under very difficult circumstances, and the results of their efforts that they can see today. The first place, second place, and third place winner will receive $4,000, $3,000 and $2,000 scholarship respectively.
The Sons of the Republic of Texas, Inc. (“SRT”) consists of members who are direct lineal descendants of those that settled the Republic of Texas prior to February 19, 1846, when Texas merged with the United States as the 28th state.

- Graduating seniors in any high school may enter.
- History, government, and English students are particularly encouraged to participate.

Contest Rules:
Applicant must write an essay 1500-2000words on the topic “Stephen F. Austin, The Father of Texas”.
- Essay are to be no fewer than 1500 words nor more than 2000 words in length (excluding endnotes and bibliography) and must be computer generated, double-spaced, on one side only of 8 8½”x11” paper.
- Quotations from other writers are encouraged but must be acknowledged and should be used with discretion.
- Essays will be screened for plagiarism using standard software designed for this purpose.
- The application must be filled out completely, including academic information.

Supporting Documents:
- Each contestant must submit an original and four 4 photocopies of their essay for judges (five in all) including the CD copy with contestant’s name, address, phone number and year of the contest.
- A copy of five applications should be attached to each of five (5) copies of the essay submitted.
