The Sean O Faolain Short Story Competition

The Munster Literature Centre is offering The Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Competition. This is an annual short story competition open to writers from around the world, and it is dedicated to one of Ireland’s most accomplished story writers and theorists. To be entering in competition, the candidates must submit original, unpublished and unbroadcast short stories in the English language of 3,000 words or fewer. Two winners will be selected, and they will get €2,000 and €500 respectively.

The Munster Literature Centre, a not-for-profit organization, was founded in 1993. The organization dedicated to the promotion and celebration of literature, especially that of Munster.

Eligibility:

• The Seán Ó Faoláin Short Story Competition is an annual short story competition open to writers from around the world.
• The story can be on any subject, in any style, by a writer of any nationality, living anywhere in the world. Minimum age for entry is 16 years old.

How to Apply:

• For applying the scholarship, the candidates must write original, unpublished and unbroadcast short stories in the English language of 3,000 words or fewer. The story can be on any subject, in any style, by a writer of any nationality, living anywhere in the world. Minimum age for entry is 16 years old. Unfortunately, translated work is not in the scope of this competition.

• Each entry must be accompanied by an entry fee of €15 or £15. Entrants other than those from Ireland or the UK must pay by Paypal, where their currency will be converted to Euro.

Submitting Details:

• Email the completed application packet to sofcomp(AT)munsterlit(DOT)ie.

• Send your entry as a Microsoft Word document (files ending with “.doc”). Please ensure that you do NOT send PDF files.

• Include the story and a letter including contact details / payment information as separate documents in the same email.

• Pay your entry fee through Paypal. Paypal accepts Mastercard and Visa and guarantees secure transactions. All Paypal payments are in Euro.

• In the body of the email, list your name, address, short story title and Paypal receipt number

• Use the subject header “SOF 2016 Entry”.

Award Amount:

• First Prize: €2,000 and publication in the literary journal Southword, AND a week-long residency at Anam Cara Writer’s and Artist’s Retreat.

• Second Prize: €500 and publication in Southword.
