Rome Prize Fellowship

The American Academy in Rome is pleased to announce the Rome Prize fellowship for U.S. students and foreign nationals who have lived in the United States for three years . Rome Prize is awarded thirty emerging artists and scholars who represent the highest standard of excellence and who are in the early or middle stages of their working lives. Winners of 6-month and 11-month fellowship will receive stipends of $16,000 and winner of 2 year fellowships will receive $28,000 amount.

The American Academy in Rome was founded in 1894. The mission of this Academy is to foster the pursuit of advanced research and independent study in the fine arts and humanities.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants for all Rome Prize fellowships, except those applying for the National Endowment for the Humanities post-doctoral fellowship, must be United States citizens at the time of the application.
  • U.S. citizens and those foreign nationals who have lived in the United States for three years immediately preceding the application deadline, may apply for the NEH post-doctoral fellowship.
  • Graduate students in the humanities may apply only for pre-doctoral fellowships only if they are ABD.
  • Previous winners of the Rome Prize are not eligible to re-apply.
  • Undergraduate students are not eligible for Rome Prize fellowship.

  • Current resume/curriculum vitae
  • CV should include languages read and spoken and level of fluency
  • A project proposal
  • A writing sample
  • Three reference letters from professionals acquainted
  • Application fee
  1. Applicants who want to apply in Ancient Studies, Medieval Studies, Renaissance and Early Modern Studies, and Modern Italian Studies following three documents, to be uploaded to your online application as three separate digital files:
  • Current resume/curriculum vitae
  • One page project proposal
  • Digital Portfolio (in PDF format) of up to 40 pages
  • Three reference letters from professionals
  • Application fee

Award Amount:

Winners of 6-month and 11-month fellowships receive stipends of $16,000 and $28,000, respectively. Winners of the 2 year fellowships receive $28,000 annually.

Application Deadline:

The deadline for applications is 1 November. Applications will also be accepted between 2-15 November for an additional fee (see below for details).
