Postdoctoral Fellowships at the Society of Fellows

The Dartmouth Society of Fellows is delighted to announce the Postdoctoral Fellowships foster the academic careers of scholars who have recently received their Ph.D. degrees. In order to apply, the applicant must have completed a Ph.D. no earlier and must have their degree in hand. Applications will be accepted in the various fields of humanities, social sciences, interdisciplinary programs, sciences, engineering, business, and medicine. The Society of Fellows aims to foster intellectual community at the highest levels and broadly across the institution. Fellows will receive a monthly stipend of $4,600 plus benefits, and $5,000 annually to support computing, travel and research needs.

The Dartmouth Society of Fellows is an interdisciplinary community that supports the integration of research and teaching excellence was founded in 2014, under the leadership of President Philip Hanlon. The Society is administered by a Faculty Director, an Assistant Director, and Senior Fellows, who recommend the appointment of Junior and Visiting Fellows.

Eligibility:

  • The Dartmouth Society of Fellows seeks candidates (Ph.D. degree students) who are prepared to initiate their next post-doctoral project. Applications will be accepted in the various fields of humanities, social sciences, interdisciplinary programs, sciences, engineering, business, and medicine.
  • Applicants for the 2018 – 2021 Society Fellowships must have completed a Ph.D. no earlier than January 1, 2016, and must have their degree in hand by June 30, 2018.

Supporting Documents:

A complete application packet consists of the following:

  • Interfolio Society of Fellows application cover sheet
  • A personal statement (of no longer than 1,500 words) outlining your completed research (including dissertation), work in progress, professional goals and plans for publication, and any other information relevant to your candidacy
  • A statement answering the question “After reviewing your opportunities at Dartmouth, what can Dartmouth do for you and what do you think will be the most productive aspect of your interactions with Dartmouth faculty and students?” (500-word limit)
  • A statement outlining your scholarly agenda for the three-year fellowship (500-word limit)
  • A curriculum vitae
  • Three confidential letters of recommendation
  • Relevant academic transcripts

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • Junior Fellowships normally run for up to 34 months, beginning on September 1 and ending on June 30th of the final year.
  • Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $4,600 plus benefits, and $5,000 annually to support computing, travel and research needs.
  • The departments and/or programs where fellows are appointed Lecturers have the primary responsibility for providing office and working space for Fellows, as well as access to other research needs or equipment.
  • The Society helps to assure the cooperation of departments in providing the requisite setting for the scholarly and creative work of each Fellow.
  • Society Postdoctoral Fellows
  • Participate in the activities of the Society, including presenting their own work
  • Hold appointments as a Lecturers in a department and/or program as well as Postdoctoral Fellows in the Society, this appointment is not tenure-track
  • Teach two courses over the course of the three-year fellowship
  • Are in residence for the fall, winter and spring terms
  • Receive training in teaching via the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning (DCAL)
  • Off-campus research leave during academic terms is permitted only in rare cases, only for brief periods of time, and only upon written application to the Faculty Director of the Society well in advance of the proposed leave
  • Are not asked to teach basic language courses
  • Have access to college resources such as the library and computing center
  • Do not control dedicated laboratory or studio space

Application Deadline:

The applications are must be received on or before September 18, 2017. Applicants are expected to identify at least one Dartmouth faculty member whose scholarship is relevant to their own.
