Have you completed your Ph.D. within the last two years? Can you demonstrate a promising career of research and leadership? The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is proud to announce NREL Director’s Postdoctoral Fellowship Programs in three disciplines (Scientist, Engineer, and Analyst). The fellowships are designed to attract the next generation of exceptionally qualified scientists and engineers with outstanding talent and credentials in renewable energy research and related disciplines.The NREL mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficient technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering, and transfer knowledge and innovation to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.Fellows will receive a research allowance of $10,000/fellowship to cover expenses for professional development activities.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future that is both environmentally and economically sustainable. With locations in Golden, Boulder and Washington D.C., NREL is the primary laboratory for research, development, and deployment of renewable energy technologies in the United States.

Eligibility:

To eligible the applicant must meet all the following criteria:

  • Scientist:
  1. All Ph.D. requirements completed prior to appointment, and are at an early point in a promising career of world-class research and leadership in the appropriate discipline.
  2. Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate with a Fundamental Science degree within the last two
  • Engineer:
  1. All Ph.D. requirements completed prior to appointment and are at an early point in a promising career of world-class research and leadership in the appropriate discipline.
  2. Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate with an Applied Engineering degree within the last two.
  • Analyst
  1. All Ph.D. requirements completed prior to appointment and are at an early point in a promising career of world-class research and leadership in the appropriate discipline.
  2. Must be a recent Ph.D. graduate with a science and/or engineering technology degree with substantial work in analysis within the last two.
  • Highly qualified postdocs with a record of superior academic performance demonstrated research and academic accomplishments in renewable energy technologies, and extraordinary scientific research abilities are encouraged to apply. Requirements:
  1. All Ph.D. requirements completed prior to appointment and be at an early point in a promising career of world-class research and leadership in the appropriate discipline
  2. Full-time commitment to an NREL research program to extend the duration of the fellowship
  3. NREL researcher/mentor’s nomination application for submission to the Postdoctoral Research Review Committee.

How to Apply:

To apply for the Director’s Fellowship, the applicant can submit one of three online applications according to your area of interest. The links are:

Supporting Documents:

Submit the following materials:

  • Cover page (please include: name, title of proposal and NREL mentor)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • A letter of recommendation from your current supervisor or academic advisor
  • Research proposal addressing the long-term science and engineering needs which would support the laboratory’s mission and goals: focus on the proposed research and identify an appropriate area within the laboratory to host the research, clearly state the research challenges, identify the scientific or technological questions that are associated with the challenge, define the strategy to address these questions, and define an approach. Three pages maximum, typed, 11 ptfont, include references/bibliography. For format, include title, short abstract and the proposal.
  • NREL mentor’s letter of intent to support the candidate
  • Names and contact information of two additional individuals from nationally known faculty or scientists in relevant disciplines who are knowledgeable about the candidate’s capabilities and research
  • Proof of D. degree prior to assignment start date

Financial Aid and Award Money:

Fellows receive a research allowance, provided by the research center, of $10,000 per fellowship to cover expenses for professional development activities including:

  • Laptops or personal computers
  • Professional development conferences, workshops, and meetings
  • Memberships, books, and subscriptions to technical organizations.

Laboratory Directed Research and Development Program Funding

  • Travel (domestic/foreign) related to the advancement of project research is allowed within the applied laboratory limits.
  • Purchase of research equipment, materials, software and supplies required to complete the project are allowed if not already available.

Note: Projects are limited to a maximum 24-month period of performance.

Application Deadline:

The Director’s Fellowship application process is held four times a year as follows:

  • Application opens on January 1 and close on March 1
  • Application opens April 1and close on June 1
  • Application opens July 1 and close on September 1
  • Application opens October 1 and close on December 1

The fellowship application’s current deadline is September 1, 2017.
