National Association of Hispanic Journalists Scholarship

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is now offering applications for its NAHJ Scholarships. One print, one radio, and one television scholarships are available. NAHJ scholarship opportunities are open to college-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students who are attending four-year colleges and universities in Illinois. NAHJ’s goals are -to organized and provide support for Hispanic Journalists, and to encourage and support the study and practices of journalism and communications by Hispanics. The NAHJ will provide a total of $3000 award for the successful candidates.

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ) is dedicated to the recognition and professional advancement of Hispanics in the news industry. Established in April 1984, NAHJ created a national voice and unified vision for all Hispanic journalists.

Eligibility:

  • College-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital or photojournalism, and social media.
  • Students attending four-year colleges and universities in Illinois are eligible to apply.
  • The following criteria will be equally considered as a committee makes its selection of scholarship recipients.
  1. Journalism Commitment: Students must demonstrate a sincere desire to pursue a career in the field of journalism.
  2. Academic Achievement: There is no minimum grade point average to qualify for NAHJ scholarships. However, academic performance will be considered.
  3. Community Awareness: Applicants need to be aware of issues that face the Latino community and Latinos in the newsroom.

How to Apply:

To apply, the applicant must submit all the following material for the scholarships:

  • Resume
  • School transcripts
  • Financial Needs Statement
  • Essay: Submit a typed, double-spaced, essay of 500 words or less. The essay should focus on why you are choosing a career in journalism given the current climate and/or why it is important to have Latinos in the newsroom.
  • Samples of your best work: These include print, digital, television, radio or photo samples.
  • Print Samples: Articles published in a college campus or community newspaper or magazine or online.
  • Television & radio samples: Should be no longer than 3 minutes. Supply the links to videos/audios that already are posted on the internet. If it’s posted on YouTube/Vimeo/Soundcloud make sure it’s posted as a public video.
  • Photojournalism Samples: Should be saved JPG. Make sure the photo’s resolution is at 72 dpi and no larger than 600K file size.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

The National Association of Hispanic Journalists Chicago Chapter is offering three separate $2000 scholarships/stipends and one $500 scholarship to Latino students.The $500 scholarship will be for social media.  There will be one print, one radio, and one television scholarship.

Application Deadline:

The applications are due on August 1, 2017. The scholarships will be awarded on August 15th.
