McNair Scholars Program

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) is pleased to announce the “McNair Scholars Program” for college students who come from low-income, first-generation families, and underrepresented groups. The McNair Scholars Program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. The aim of the program is to provide scholars with a comprehensive program of academic support services and preparation for graduate study. Winners will get up to $2,400 stipend with a four-week summer research opportunity.

The Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) was founding in 1875, it has progressed and evolved to match the changing needs of those it serves.

Eligibility:

To be eligible for McNair Scholars Program, candidate must have all of the following requirements:

  • Matriculated student pursuing a baccalaureate degree at IUP
  • Strong interest in pursuing a doctoral degree
  • Sophomore or junior undergraduate at the time of application
  • A cumulative grade point average of 2.8 or better
  • U.S citizen or permanent U.S. resident, or in the U.S for other than a temporary purpose and provide evidence from the Immigration and Naturalization Service of his/her intent to become a permanent resident
  • First-generation college student from a low-income background or belong to  underrepresented group (African American, Native American/Alaskan Native, and Hispanic American)
  • The Department of Education also includes Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders (with an affiliation with the United States, such as residents of American Samoa, Guam, Mariana Islands and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands) in the underrepresented group’s designation
  • Submit a complete application postmarked or received by the deadline date; complete an interview, and be accepted into the program
  • Live in Indiana, Pennsylvania, for the duration of the summer program

Supporting Document:

  • Attach a photocopy of the appropriate federal income tax return
  • Attach a photocopy of your most recent FAFSA form
  • Attach a photocopy of your Indiana University of Pennsylvania financial aid award letter
  • Attach an official transcript from each college and university previously attended, or arrange for an official transcript from each college and university to be sent to the IUP McNair Program office.
  • Deliver the recommendation forms to two faculty members, and, if desired, to a third member of the university or community.

Application Deadline:

The 2016–17 McNair Scholars application deadline is December 2, 2016.
