IPJ Women Peace Makers Fellowships

The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) at University of San Diego is pleased to offer “Women Peace Makers and Peace Researcher Women PeaceMakers Fellowship Program”. Fellowship program is open for women building peace in their communities to participate in an active learning community. The aim of the Women PeaceMakers program is to build stronger, more effective collaborations between peace builders from conflict-affected communities and international peace partners. Women PeaceMakers will receive funding up to $7,500 and Peace Researchers will receive $5,000.

The University of San Diego is a private Roman Catholic university in San Diego, California, United States. The university offers 42 baccalaureate degrees and several degrees in law, nursing, and other doctorate programs.

Eligibility:

The Women PeaceMakers Fellowship must:

  • Have worked for 10+ years as a peacebuilder, human rights defender, or peacemaker, leading peace efforts designing and working directly with the security sector in her country of origin;
  • Be a founder or leader of an organization, network, or movement;
  • Demonstrates peacebuilding/peacemaking skills and attitudes;
  • Be in a position to participate in all activities during the 10-month fellowship and apply what is learned at the conclusion of the residency program;
  • Demonstrate local credibility and a strong social network within the country/community of practice;
  • Speak sufficient English to relate personal experiences. Written English is not necessary.

Peace Researcher Women PeaceMakers Program must be:

  • Graduate degree, or current enrollment in a graduate or postgraduate program, related to peace studies, conflict resolution, human rights, international relations or gender studies.
  • Outstanding writing skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in qualitative research methods; familiarity with narrative inquiry and analysis, as well as semi-structured interviewing methods, preferred.
  • Familiarity with the field of women, peace, and security. Past research or publications related to the field is preferred.
  • Experience conducting interviews in a cross-cultural setting. Applicants must be able to work closely with people for whom English is a second language.
  • Must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively.

Women PeaceMakers Program applicants must include the following documents

  • A written statement describing:
  • Why you are interested in participating in the 2017 Women PeaceMakers Program. (No more than 2 pages)
  • Your journey of becoming a peacemaker including:
  1. Through your work, how do you engage with the security sector? (No more than 2 pages)
  2. Do you work with international partners (INGOs, international donors, UN agencies, or others)?
  • A resume or curriculum vitae of your professional peacemaking activities and educational background.
  • Two letters of reference.

Peace Researcher must include following documents along with the application

  • An essay describing your interest in the Women PeaceMakers program and why you want to be a peace researcher. (No more than 2 pages)
  • Two letters of reference.(At least one must be an academic reference)
  • Resume or curriculum vitae.
  • Writing samples.
  • A sample of your analytic writing, on an issue relevant to peace studies, international relations, human rights or gender studies.
  • A sample of your research methods, e.g., a past study proposal, the methods section of your dissertation or another example of qualitative methods developed as a student of a research methods course, or for a research publication.

IPJ Women Peace Makers Fellowships

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • Women PeaceMakers will receive funding (up to $7,500 US) to implement a community-based initiative in their home country focused on the Partnership Compact with local stakeholders.
  • Peace Researchers will receive $5,000, less applicable taxes, over an 8-week period.

Application Deadline:
