The Harford Community College is excited to announce the establishment of the NSF S-STEM Scholarship Program that is supported or funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Incoming freshman students are eligible to apply. Current and transfer students will be considered on a space available basis. The program is designed to support/assist academically talented full-time students who are majoring in biology and engineering with financial need to continue their education and pursue careers in STEM fields.S-STEM scholarships will be awarded for up to two years beginning in fall 2017. The winners will receive two-year scholarships of up to $10,000 per year.
TheHarford Community College is a community college for Harford County, Maryland in Churchville, in eastern Harford County, in the northeast area of the State of Maryland. The school was established as “Harford Junior College” in September 1957. The National Science Foundation is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. The NSF was formed on May 10, 1950- 67 years ago.
Eligibility:
A student receiving an S-STEM scholarship funded by the National Science Foundation must:
- Be a U.S. citizen, national, refugee alien, or permanent resident alien
- Be enrolled full-time (registered for a minimum of 12 credits per semester)
- Declare a major in the STEM fields of biology or engineering
- Demonstrate financial need (as defined for undergraduate students by the U.S. Department of Education criteria for Federal financial aid). An FAFSA is required to determine financial need.
- Demonstrate academic potential with a minimum 3.0 GPA in coursework in high school or college AND placement into Precalculus or Calculus I and
- Agree to participate in all HI-StEM program activities.
To continue in the program, a student must:
- Maintain full-time status (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
- Maintain the cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better
- Earn grades of B or better in MATH 203 and PHYS 101/PHYS203 for biology majors or MATH 203 and PHYS 203 for engineering majors
- Actively participate in the HI-STEM program activities.

- Complete the 2017-2018 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at https://fafsa.gov. HCC School Code 002075 must be included on the FAFSA.
- One page personal essay describing your academic and career plans (350 – 450 words)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Accuplacer, SAT, ACT, AP, or IB scores in Math, or qualifying score on HCC’s Calculus Readiness Test
- Official Transcripts (high school or college)

- Students who have previously submitted letters of recommendations and/or transcripts to the Office of Admissions and Advising do not need to resubmit these documents.
Financial Aid and Award Money:
- Scholarships vary in amount up to $10,000 per year based on financial need and EFC.
- Scholarship recipients will be a part of the HI-StEM (High-Intensity Student Engagement Model) program, a cohort learning community led by STEM faculty to create stronger connections and engagement with STEM students through targeted academic programming.
- This important funding will provide two-year scholarships of up to $10,000 per year to HCC students for a total of $390,000 in scholarships over a five-year period.
