The California Weed Science Society (CWSS) is offering three unique opportunities that are CWSS Scholarships, CWSS Internships, and CWSS Undergraduate Research Awards. To be eligible for any of these awards the student must be pursuing a degree at an accredited 2-year college or 4-year university in California.The program is open to supporting undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in weed or invasive plant management. The CWSS will provide the undergraduate research award up to $2,000, the internship award of up to $3,000 for an 8-week full-time internship, and academic scholarships up to $2,000 for undergraduate and graduate students.
The California Weed Science Society (CWSS) was founded in 1948. The CWSS provides professional education and information exchange on weed science, provides a forum on public issues in weed science, encourages research in weed science, supports college students seeking a career in weed science, and promotes professional growth and interaction for its members in California.
Eligibility:
- Undergraduate and graduate students are eligible
- The student must be pursuing a degree at an accredited 2-year college or 4-year university in California.
- Preference will be given to students that can demonstrate a strong interest in weed or invasive plant management.

Supporting Documents:
The following are required materials for all scholarship or internship applications.
- Resume stating current GPA, work experience, university/community activities and honors, and a list of relevant courses taken.
- Transcripts may be requested
- A statement (500 words max) of academic and career goals that reflect the student’s interest in weed or invasive plant management.
- One letter of support from the student’s academic advisor.
- For internship only: letter of verification from the supervisor.
The following are required materials for all Undergraduate Research Award applications.
- Resume stating current GPA, work experience, university/community activities and honors, and a list of relevant courses taken.
- Transcripts may be requested
- A 2-3 page research proposal written by the student including title, objective, general experimental approach, discussion of the significance of the project to weed science, references, and budget.
- A letter of support from the faculty sponsor.
- A letter of support from the supervisor of the research project if different from the faculty sponsor.
Financial Aid and Award Money:
- CWSS Scholarships: Academic scholarships up to $2,000 are available for undergraduate and graduate students. Undergraduate and graduate student applications will be evaluated separately.
- CWSS Internships: The internship is an award of up to $3,000 for an 8-week full-time internship with a University of California Farm Advisor or other off-campus research personnel with responsibilities in weed or invasive plant management.
- CWSS Undergraduate Research Awards: The undergraduate research award is a grant up to $2,000 for a research project related to weed or invasive plant management. The award may be used to defray the cost of research supplies, travel, as a stipend to support the student’s time conducting the project, or any combination of these items. Upon completion of the project, the student will present the research as a poster or talk at the annual CWSS conference (held annually in January).
