Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) is pleased to announce “The Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship Program”. The role of the scholarship is to recruit high school sophomores and juniors whose socio-economic backgrounds and environmental conditions may inhibit their ability to persevere and attain their educational goals. Each year, twenty-five students are selected as Herter Scholarship recipients and they receive up to 50% of their calculated need at the college of their choice.
The Massachusetts Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) is primarily responsible for the management and oversight of all state funded financial aid programs and advises the Board of Higher Education about financial aid policy matters of concern to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Eligibility:
To be eligible for a Christian A. Herter Memorial Scholarship, a candidate must:
- Be a permanent legal resident of Massachusetts.
- Be a U.S. Citizen or non-citizen eligible under Title IV regulations.
- Be in compliance with Selective Service Registration.
- Not be in default of any federal or state Student Loans for attendance at any institution or owe a refund for any previous financial aid received.
- Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.
- Exhibit difficult personal circumstances, high financial need, and strong academic promise to continue education beyond the secondary level.
- The candidate enrolled in a public or private secondary school in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Supporting Documents:
Candidate must include:
- The Christian a. Herter application form.
- The Nominee’s Autobiographical Essay.
- Letter of Recommendation from Nominating School or Agency.
- Supporting Financial Statement (including copy of 2016 tax forms).
- Two (2) other Letters of Recommendation.
- Original Official High School Transcript (Copies not accepted).

Financial Aid and Award Money:
Each year 25 students are selected and receive up to 50% of their calculated need at the college of their choice within the continental United States.
Scholarship awards vary and are based on educational cost, including tuition, room, board, required fees, books, and transportation.
