CAAPA Music Scholarship Program

Every year Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) offers to graduate high school music students an opportunity to perform in a Student Showcase. The applicants must perform before an audience of peers, parents, guests, and music professionals. The experience that applicants will gain by participating in the CAAPA Scholarship Program is one they will never forget. A top winner is selected and receives the CAAPA Youth Music Award with another cash prize to use for music study.

Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) supports, encourages, and creates Performance Opportunities for Students, Aspiring, Emerging and Established Musicians, in order to help foster their musical careers goals, dreams, and ambitions.

Eligibility:

  • Applicants must be high school juniors or seniors in the Washington, DC and Baltimore metropolitan areas and of African American, Caribbean, or African descent.
  • Applicant must display a keen interest in the performing arts with a focus on classical music, through a juried audition process. The student must consider classical performing arts as a major.

How to Apply:

Interested candidates can apply for the given scholarship either online or offline.

Supporting Documents:

The applicants must submit the resume and be prepared to perform and include electronic media with music.

  • Vocalists: Expect to perform two pieces, preferably in classical style, and at least one in a foreign language.
  • Pianists/organists: Expect to perform two works selected from baroque, classical, romantic or modern periods and one other piece of choice.
  • String Instrumentalists: Expect to perform one or more movements from a baroque and one or more movements from a classical or romantic sonata or concerto.
  • Wind Instrumentalists: Expect to perform two contrasting pieces or two movements from a solo sonata or concerto.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • All of the performing students are guaranteed a scholarship to attend a music program the following fall.
  • A top winner is selected and receives the CAAPA Youth Music Award with another cash prize to use for music study.
  • The student is also, as a part their package given a performance opportunity at one of CAAPA’s gala events before hundreds.
