American Political Science Association Congressional (APSC) Fellowships

The American Political Science Association’s (APSA) is offering two fellowships named as “The APSC Congressional Fellowship” and the “APSA-MCI Communications Congressional Fellowship”. Journalists with at least five years of experience can apply for these fellowships. The fellowships provide editorial and financial support to journalists who need the time and resources to tackle complex, time-consuming stories. Recipients will receive a stipend of $50,000, plus a small travel allowance with other many benefits.

Founded in 1903, the American Political Science Association (APSA) is the leading professional organization for the study of political science with a range of programs and services for individuals, departments and institutions.

Eligibility:

  • Political Science:
  1. Applicants must have US citizenship or permanent US residency
  2. A PhD in political science completed within the last 15 years or a dissertation in political science defended
  3. A scholarly interest in Congress and the policymaking process
  4. Preference is given to those without extensive Capitol Hill experience
  5. Applicants who would like to be considered for the optional course on Congress and Foreign Policy must also demonstrate a scholarly background in foreign policy
  • Journalism:
  1. Applicants must have US citizenship or permanent residency and hold a bachelor’s degree
  2. In addition, print journalists must have two to ten years of professional newspaper or magazine experience at the time of application
  3. Background may be in writing, reporting or editing
  4. Broadcast journalists must have two to ten years of professional experience in radio or television at the time of application
  5. Background may be in reporting, producing, directing, or writing
  6. In all cases, experience may be partly or fully in professional online journalism
  7. Preference is given to candidates with a background in political reporting but without extensive Washington experience
  8. Applicants who would like to be considered for the optional course on Congress and Foreign Policy must also demonstrate a professional background in foreign policy
  • APSA-MCICommunications:
  1. Candidates must have US citizenship or permanent residency
  2. Scholarsmust have a PhD completed within the last 15 years or will have defended a PhD
  3. Journalistsmay be print or broadcast journalists (including online journalists) and must hold a bachelor’s degree. Print journalists must have two to ten years of professional newspaper or magazine experience at the time of application
  4. Background may be in writing, reporting or editing. Broadcast journalists must have two to ten years of professional experience in radio or television at the time of application. Background may be in reporting, producing, directing, or writing
  5. In all cases, experience may be partly or fully in professional online journalism

Financial Aid & Award Money:

  • Recipients of the APSA Congressional Fellowship receive a stipend of $50,000, plus a small travel allowance.
  • In addition, APSA will cover the cost of tuition for Fellows selected to take the class on Congress and Foreign Policy.
  • Congressional fellows who are also selected for a fellowship through the steigerfund will receive a stipend for the duration of the steigerfellowship.
