American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) has partnered with the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) and Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) to manage and develop education in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Scholarship Program is designed to reach out to the next generation of scientists and engineers. The program helps students to focus on academics instead of mounting financial debt and provides financial assistance to students who are enrolled in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) degrees. The winners will get a one-time 10,000 scholarship award.
The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) is a national, nonprofit organization was Founded in 1977. The mission of AISES is to substantially increase the representation of American Indians, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, First Nations and other indigenous peoples of North America in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies and careers.
Eligibility:
- Pursue a Navy-relevant Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) degree. To learn more about the types of STEM degrees that may be relevant to the Navy, check out: https://www.navy.com/careers/engineering-applied-science.html
- Must be a high school senior anticipating successful graduation in the current year or a current freshman.
- Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an American Indian and Alaska Native-Serving Institution as designated by the Department of Education. The school must also have an ABET accredited engineering program—however, all students studying any Navy-relevant STEM topic at these schools (AI-AN Serving Schools that have an ABET Engineering program) are eligible.
- Applicants must be an enrolled member/citizen or a descendant of an enrolled member/citizen. Must have a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
- Must be a US Citizen
- Applicant must not have been charged, arrested, prosecuted and/or convicted of an offense that would prevent the recipient from obtaining an interim security clearance at NAVSEA and/or SSP.
- The student must demonstrate a clear financial need as determined and validated by the school.

- Tribal Enrollment Verification: Students must be an enrolled member or citizen or a descendant of an enrolled member or citizen. Students may submit a Certificate of Indian Blood (CIB) or proof of tribal enrollment (tribal ID, enrollment card or letter issued by your tribal or village government). Also, students may submit documents that show proof of dependency from an enrolled member or citizen of a Tribe/Nation/Native Village or Native Hawaiian.
- Resume: Submit your current resume.
- Photo: A headshot photo, in jpeg format.
- Letters of Recommendation: Be sure to give your recommenders plenty of time—at least 3 weeks, more is better—to complete their recommendation for you.
- Essays: Students are required to submit 3 essays, up to 1,000 words each. These essays are an important part of the scholarship review process.
Essay Guidelines:
- Essay Prompt 1: Please share a personal statement that highlights your background, interests, academic achievements, and what impact you hope to have in your community and/or profession.
- Essay Prompt 2: What stimulated your interest in your chosen major or area of study?
- Essay Prompt 3: What activity or activities (cultural, community-related, occupational, academic, athletic etc.) most clearly reflect your character? Describe your participation. Why is participation in this activity or these activities important to you?

Financial Aid and Award Money:
The NAVSEA Scholarship Program (funded by NAVSEA and SSP) consists of two parts:
- A one-time $10,000 scholarship awarded the freshman year of college
- An opportunity to apply for summer employment, which provides valuable technical work experience and continued tuition assistance (up to $15,000 per annum)

The NAVSEA Scholarship application deadline is May 1, 2017, for current high school seniors and March 15, 2017, for current college freshmen
