Rhodes Scholarship Program

The Rhodes Trust provides the Rhodes Scholarships in partnership with the Second Century Founders, John McCall MacBain O.C. and The Atlantic Philanthropies, and many other generous benefactors.The Rhodes Trust warmly welcomes applications from talented young persons of diverse backgrounds.  In order to apply, all applicants must have completed their undergraduate degree to a very high standard by 1 October of the year following application.The Rhodes Trust, based at the University of Oxford, brings together and develops exceptional people from all over the world, and in all fields of study, who are impatient with the way things are and have the courage to act.Thirty-two Scholarships are assigned annually to the United States of America. The Rhodes Trust will provide payment to the Scholar’s college of all tuition fees (such as matriculation, tuition, and certain other set charges), plus a maintenance stipend (except for those receiving fourth-year fees) of not less than £14,276 per annum.

They encourage them to openly debate, challenge each other’s thinking and generate new ideas.The will of Cecil Rhodes (1853-1902) created the Rhodes Scholarships, managed by the Rhodes Trust.The Rhodes is the oldest and perhaps the most prestigious international scholarship program in the world, which aims to nurture public-spirited leaders for the world’s future.

Eligibility:

To eligible at the time of application, an applicant must be:

  • An applicant must be a citizen of the United States or must have been admitted to the United States as a lawful permanent resident and must have maintained, and be expected to maintain, legal status as a lawful permanent resident. A prior requirement for lawful permanent residents to have maintained residency for five years prior to the application deadline is no longer applicable.
  • Eligible to apply through one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or one of the U.S. territories: either in the state or territory where the applicant was legally resident on April 15 in the year of application, or where the applicant will have received at least two years of college training and a bachelor’s degree before October 1 in the year following election.
  • At least 18 but not yet 24 years of age (i.e., the applicant must still be 23 on October 1 in the year of application).
  • An applicant with dual citizenship or applying as a United States lawful permanent resident shall not have applied for the Scholarship as a citizen or permanent resident of another country, may not apply in two jurisdictions at once, and may not apply in a different national jurisdiction after having in the United States.
  • Applicants in the United States may apply either through the state where they are legally resident or where they have attended college for at least two years.

Supporting Documents:

To apply, the applicant must produce:

  • Proof of citizenship or lawful permanent resident status.
  • A certified transcript (or transcripts).
  • A list of principal activities.
  • A clear, printable head and shoulders photograph (preferably high resolution).
  • The endorsement of the applicant’s college or university.
  • Five, but not more than eight, letters of recommendation. At least four of these letters must be persons from whom the applicant has received undergraduate or graduate instruction, and at least one letter (the fifth) must speak to the applicant’s character.
  • A personal statement not exceeding 1000 words which the applicant must attest as wholly truthful and his or her own work.
  • Two samples of recent written work, approximately 2,000 words each, are required for admission to read for any degree in other than a mathematical or scientific subject. These samples are only required of those having been elected to a Rhodes Scholarship.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

The value of a Rhodes Scholarship consists of a direct payment to the Scholar’s college of all tuition fees (such as matriculation, tuition, and certain other set charges), plus a maintenance stipend (except for those receiving fourth-year fees) of not less than £14,276 per annum paid directly to the Scholar in installments during the term of the Scholarship

Successful candidates will apply to the University of Oxford shortly after selection.

Application Deadline:

  • The 2017-Rhodes Scholarship applications are available each year in early July. In 2017, the application deadline is 11:59 PM U.S. Eastern Time on Wednesday, October 4, 2017.
  • The applicant must be prepared to attend a reception and personal interview and remain for possible reinterviews and the election announcement, in the city serving the respective district region, on the Friday and Saturday preceding the Thanksgiving holiday.
