The MEA Scholarship

The Michigan Education Association (MEA) is pleased to announce its MEA Scholarship to the graduate of a Michigan public high school or private high school that has an MEA bargaining unit. The Association is an organization dedicated to the principles of public education, advancement of quality education, and security of the rights of education employees. The amount and a number of scholarships offered each year shall be determined by the trustees of the MEA Scholarship Fund.

The Michigan Education Association (MEA) is a self-governing education association, representing about 140,000 teachers, education support professionals and higher education employees throughout the state.MEA started in 1852 as the Michigan State Teachers Association with 20 teachers in Ypsilanti.

Eligibility:

  • Dependent of MEA member or MEA-Retired member in good standing
  • A graduate of a Michigan public high school or private high school that has an MEA bargaining unit.
  • Will attend or is currently an undergraduate student of a Michigan public community/junior college, four-year-degree-granting institution, or vocational training institution that grants a degree, certification or license.
  • Those attending the following private institutions only are also eligible: Baker College-Flint/Owosso, University of Detroit–Mercy, Adrian College, Finlandia University, and Albion College (The aforementioned private institutions are existing local MEA affiliates.)
  • Children of MEA officers, fund trustees, and MEA staff are not eligible. (A child of an MEA, MESSA or MEA-FS staff person is eligible if the other parent is an MEA member in good standing.)

Supporting Documents:

  • High school applicant: Official high school transcript showing cumulative GPA, including 1st-semester senior year, and any higher education course transcripts including dual enrollment
  • High school or undergrad applicants: Two letters of recommendation that address applicant’s qualifications in meeting the selection criteria (may not be a family member or a school principal/designee or counselor/college advisor if writing statement on page 3)
  • Undergrad applicant or returning recipient: Copy of high school transcript
  • Returning recipient: One letter of recommendation
  • Copy of SAT and/or ACT score documentation (if not included on high school transcript) only best score
  • Undergrad applicant or returning recipient: Current official college transcript
  • Personal statement (see page 4)
  • Personal resume (one-sheet limit is strictly adhered to)
  • Principal/designee or counselor/college advisor statement and his/her signature (see page 4)
  • Three signatures of applicant on required lines (see pages 1, 3, and 4)

The completed form with required attachments should be returned either handwritten or typed in blue or black ink (do NOT use pencil, notebook or heavy weight paper) to:

Financial Aid and Award Money:

The amount and a number of scholarships offered each year shall be determined by the trustees of the MEA Scholarship Fund. Such scholarships may be offered on a renewal basis limited to four times in a five-year period.

Application Deadline:
