A Voice for Animals Contest

The Humane Education Network and the Animal Welfare Institute are excited to present the 27th annual A Voice for Animals Contest for high school students across the globe. The contest is supported by a partnership between the Animal Welfare Institute and the Humane Education Network with additional support from the Palo Alto Humane Society. The “A Voice for Animals Contest” has three sections for 14-15 year old students and 16-18 year old students. Prizes up to a total of $5900 will be awarded to high school students.

The Animal Protection Information Service (APIS) is an online database provided by the Humane Education Network. The information in APIS will be useful to animal advocates, students, reporters, legislators, scientists, policy makers in business and education, and the general public.

Eligibility:

  • Participants must currently be attending middle or high school, or be home-schooled and under 19 years of age on January 10, 2017 (the date the contest opened for entries).
  • The contest is also open to ESL (English as a Second Language) students.
  • The contest is open to all otherwise eligible students worldwide regardless of nationality, citizenship or country of residence.

 How to Apply:

Participants between the ages of 14 and 18 are invited to write an essay or create a video (see submission requirements for details) that discusses how one animal species has been affected by climate change and presents ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it

  • Entrants in the 14-15 year old sectionare invited to write an essay that addresses either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction, occurring anywhere in the world, and potential solutions to alleviate animal suffering.
  • Entrants in the 16-18 year old sectionmust become involved in a project (new or pre-existing) that addresses either the mistreatment of one animal species or one cause of animal suffering, or the preservation of one species threatened with extinction, occurring anywhere in the world. Students must submit either 1) a written essay with accompanying photos or 2) an original video.
  • Entrants in the 14-18 year old sectionare invited to write an essay or create a that addresses the impact of climate change on the animal population and discusses how one animal species has been affected by climate change and presents ideas to raise awareness of this species and what can be done to protect it.

Submission format

  • All submissions must be made using the form which will appear below only while the contest is open for entries. Essays submitted any other way (e.g. via e-mail or the postal service) will not be accepted.
  • Essay files will be uploaded directly to our website via the entry form. Other forms of submission will require that you provide a URL to your submission because it will be on another website. The entry form will explain how to obtain, copy & paste the required URL into the entry form.

Financial Aid and Award Money:

Prizes up to a total of $5900 will be awarded to high school students whose entries best promote the humane treatment of animals.
