New York Academy of Medicine Library History of Medicine Fellowships

With the mission, the New York Academy of Medicine advances solutions that promote the health and well-being of people in cities worldwide. Hence, the Academy Library is now offering its two annual research fellowships that are The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship in the History of Medicine and Public Health and The Paul Klemperer Fellowship in the History of Medicine. These programs are available for those, whose research will take advantage of resources that are uniquely available at NYAM. Through these fellowships, the Academy library is- to support the advancement of scholarly research in the history of medicine and public health.The academy will provide total $10,000 award in their two fellowships. The fellow is expected to spend at least four weeks in New York City, working at The New York Academy of Medicine.

Eligibility:

The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship:

  • Anyone, regardless of citizenship, academic discipline, or academic status.
  • Preference will be given to:
  1. Those whose research will take advantage of resources that are uniquely available at the Academy
  2. Individuals in the early stages of their careers,
  3. Applications which include an emphasis on the use of visual materials held within the Academy’s collections and elsewhere.

The Paul Klemperer Fellowship:

  • Anyone, regardless of citizenship, academic discipline, or academic status.
  • Preference will be given to:
  1. Those whose research will take advantage of resources that are uniquely available at NYAM
  2. Individuals in the early stages of their careers.

Supporting Documents:

A complete application includes:

  • Curriculum Vitae: attach your current CV, make sure to include the following:
  1. Educational history: include any programs in which you are currently enrolled, as well as post-doctoral experience. Include the institutions, the fields of study, degrees received (if any), and the dates of enrollment.
  2. Research and professional experience: include all work experience that you consider relevant to this fellowship.
  3. Professional and academic honors
  4. Personal Bibliography: include journal articles, book chapters, books or other publications, and theses and dissertations.

 

  • Project proposal: Attach a description, in no more than two thousand words, of the project for which you are seeking this fellowship. Specify how this project will fit in with your broader professional objectives.
  • Two letters of recommendation

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • The Audrey and William H. Helfand Fellowship: Each HelfandFellow receives a stipend of $5,000 to support travel, lodging and incidental expenses for a flexible period between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2018.
  • The Paul Klemperer Fellowship: Each Klemperer fellow receives a stipend of $5,000 to support travel, lodging and incidental expenses for a flexible period between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2018.
  • The Fellow is expected to spend at least four weeks in New York City, working at The New York Academy of Medicine.
  • Besides completing a research project, each fellow will be expected to make a public presentation at the Academy, contribute a post to our blog, and submit a final report.

Application Deadline:

The applications are due on Friday, August 25, 2017, and letters of recommendation are due on Monday, August 28, 2017.Current applications are for fellowships that may be used between January 1 and December 31, 2018.
