Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad

The U.S. Department of Education is proud to announce Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowship Program for doctoral candidates. This program provides the grants to colleges and universities to fund individual doctoral students who conduct research in other countries, in modern foreign languages and area studies for periods of six to 12 months. This year $3,011,504 award is estimated for 90 fellowships.

U.S. Department of Education (ED’s) was created in 1980 by combining offices from several federal agencies. ED’s mission is to promote student achievement and preparation for global competitiveness by fostering educational excellence and ensuring equal access.

Eligibility:

  • Graduate students in doctoral programs in the fields of foreign languages and area studies must apply through the institutions in which they are enrolled.
  • A student is eligible to receive a fellowship if he or she:
  1. Is a citizen or national of the United States or is a permanent resident of the United States
  2. Is a graduate student in good standing at an institution of higher education in the United States who, when the fellowship begins
  3. Is admitted to candidacy in a doctoral program in modern foreign languages and area studies at that institution; when the fellowship period begins
  4. Is planning a teaching career in the United States upon graduation and
  5. Possesses adequate skills in the language(s) necessary to carry out the dissertation project

In order to apply fellowship applicants may register or login through the Department’s G5 system at www.G5.gov

  • A narrative – submitted via G5 e-Application (Check Federal Register notice for page limitations)
  • A bibliography – submitted via G5 e-Application (Check Federal Register notice for page limitations)
  • Host Country Supporting Materials
  • Unofficial Transcripts—Graduate and Undergraduate–submitted electronically (recommended to help demonstrate the applicant’s language and area studies academic training)
  • Electronic Graduate Student References – initiate the email to your referees
  • Electronic Language Reference for each language of research– initiate the email to your referees

Type of Award: Discretionary grants redistributed as fellowships to individual beneficiaries.
