The Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition

The mission of the Orlando Science Center is “Inspire science learning for life”. With the mission, the OSC is thrilled to publicize its science competition termed as the Dr. Nelson Ying Science Competition”. Every year for over a decade, Dr. Nelson Ying hosts this competition in collaboration with the Orlando Science Center. The competition is open to high school student or home school equivalent who resides in Central Florida. The Orlando Science Center will provide “Ying Prize” of $5,000 to the top student, $1,000 to their teacher and $1,000 to their principal.

Orlando Science Center is supported by United Arts of Central Florida.Today, Orlando Science Center attracts more than half a million visitors each year with dynamic and engaging content. The goal has always been to personalize the guest experience, demonstrating how science impacts everyday life.

Eligibility:

  • Reside in Central Florida
  • Be a high school student or home school equivalent (grades 9, 10, 11, & 12)
  • Have a project in one of the Physical Science Categories:
  1. Chemistry
  2. Computer Science
  3. Earth and Space Sciences
  4. Engineering
  5. Environmental Sciences
  6. Mathematics
  7. Physics
  • Identify any mentors and their role in the project
  • This competition not only honors innovative student science research but also exemplary teens.

How to Apply:

  • To be applying the candidate may download and complete application form Project Summary & Certification, through the given link:http://www.osc.org/education/science-competitions/dr-ying-competition/#
  • This year they have switched to utilizing Dropbox and their DROPitTOme option to help keep paper submissions “green-minded” and simple! – To submit your paperwork:
  1. Click on the link on the Ying page of the Orlando Science Center’s website, or visit http://www.dropitto.me/oscying.
  2. The page will prompt you for a password, type in “lying” (all lowercase, no quotations).
  3. You will then be prompted to choose a file from your computer to attach and submit.

Supporting Documents:

Submit the following either as a Word Document or PDF file:

  • Have a letter of reference from their science teacher or mentor
  • Submit a paper on a science project that meets the following requirements:
  • An abstract or executive summary of one page
  • Project paper- no more than 10 pages, double-spaced, type size 12, Tahoma or Verdana font type
  • References and appendix no more than 5 double-spaced pages

Financial Aid and Award Money:

  • Finalists are invited to participate in a three-day, expenses-paid event, concluded by an awards luncheon to announce the “Ying Prize” of $5,000 to the top student, $1,000 to their teacher and $1,000 to their principal!
  • Five (5) finalists will be selected by a panel of judges based on the written research reports they submitted.

Application Deadline:

The science competition papers due on 5:00 p.m. March 23, 2017, and finalists notified will be on April 4, 2017. Competition Weekend: April 21-23, 2017
