What is Digital Responsibility?

Digital Responsibility is an organization based in Santa Clara, California. It has a mission to help the younger generation learn how to use technology in a responsible and safe way. Started by Silicon Valley tech company employees, this organization offers information on its website, along with scholarships, such as the Don’t Text and Drive Scholarship, due to financial help from donors and sponsors.

The Basics of the Don’t Text and Drive Scholarship

Digital Responsibility focuses on helping students learn about and understand the risks of texting while driving. It is the goal that through applying for this scholarship, students will discover information, such as how texting can increase the likelihood of an accident, and apply what they learn to their lives by never using their phone when they are behind the wheel.

Eligibility

Any student in high school or college may apply for the scholarship. Students may attend public or private colleges or universities, and homeschooled individuals may apply, too. The scholarship does not have a set age requirement. The only requirement is filling out an application, including the essay portion, and being a legal resident or citizen of the United States.

How to apply

Students can find the application on the Digital Responsibility website. The application requires entering personal information, including age, address, email, phone number, birthdate, gender, graduation year, and GPA. It also requires entering the college attending or colleges the student may attend and the area of study. Finally, to complete the application, the student must write a statement that completes the sentence “I pledge to not text and drive because” in 140 characters.

Important information

After submitting the application, the organization chooses the top 10 finalists based on the character statement. If a student is selected as a finalist, he or she must write an essay of 500 to 1,000 words about the topic of texting and driving. The deadline for applying each year usually falls in September around No Texting While Driving Day. The award ranges from $500 to $1,500.

More options

Digital Responsibility offers additional scholarships for high school students and students who are already attending college. Students may learn more about these other scholarships, which include the E-Waste scholarship and Digital Privacy Scholarship, on the organization’s scholarship page.
